“We went to the manager and objected, explaining that the service was not very good.”
“the prices are very reasonable compared to other places on newbury st. the only downside is that they dont take reservations for the patio and you might have a little wait to be seated outside because everyone loves 29's patio.”
“The initial service was slow.”
LOVE THIS PLACE!.
I adore this place. I have been going for years.
the burger is out of this world.
i love the swordfish.
the fries are to die for.
the regulars who come in are so funny to listen too. the bartenders are all hottt and so are the servers.
the prices are very reasonable compared to other places on newbury st.
the only downside is that they dont take reservations for the patio and you might have a little wait to be seated outside because everyone loves 29's patio. No wonder they got best of boston people watching i sit there for hours some days and just people watch.
go there! you wont be dissapointed i promise!
WORST place EVER...PERIOD. To start off, the ownership is HORRIBLE at 29 Newbury. I hear it was the "place" to be...in the 80's!! Since then, nothing but downhill. I took my girlfriend, who was visiting from San Francisco, after walking the city all day. As soon as we walked in, we both felt like we entered a high school dance. With the staff gathered around the bar, gossiping and laughing. It took a while to get our waiters attention from the bartender and when we did, we felt like we were inconveniencing them. We sat down, glancing at the menu and prices and we thought the selection was limited and prices were high but thought to give it a shot. BIG mistake. We went simple and my girlfriend got the turkey burger and I got the regular burger. The turkey burger wasn't even cooked all the way through!! My burger tasted like it was frozen then thawed, frozen again then cooked. The best part of our experience was paying the bill just to leave as soon as possible. Don't ever waste your time with this place. Boston has MANY great restaurants and bars and this place doesn't even deserve to be on the map.
The Real Life Cheers!. I just went to 29 Newbury last night for the first time and I LOVED IT!!! First, the food was amazing; everything that we ate was cooked perfectly and was very tasty! The prices are very reasonable for the city and especially Newbury! I also really like the atmosphere. The whole restaurant was candle lit and the mood was perfect. Also our waiter Bruno was simply the BEST! After diner we even got a drink at the bar where we were totally engaged in conversation with everyone else at the bar. The bartender made everyone feel very comfortable and he seemed to know everyone?s name and drink order....it was very cool! This is a place I will def. be back to!!!
yuk!.
arrived with party of 6 on a sat night 7-ish hoping for some fine dining/good service.
i had perused the food menu and cocktail menu online prior to the evening. The only redeeming
quality was that the hostess sat us promptly. The initial service was slow. waitress not the brightest bulb.i asked for a cocktail menu and the waitress informed me they didn't have one.....interesting considering there'sa specialty drinks menu on-line. The steak my boyfriend ordered had a string of fat running through it...the bar had run out of cherries and mint...seriously!!! Credit to the chef..decent food presentation. And what's up with the boom box in the background?????Too bad...would be a nice venue for a motivated, experienced restaurant owner.
What the @@@@.
"What the HELL is with that sushi bar?"
Now I've been away for a while... But.. You have got to be kidding me.. Why would ANY owner/mgr. sign off on that sushi bar being there in the front window when there's no sushi chef. And it's dirty looking. What a waste. It's retarded to lose all of that valuable, and small, sitting and standing room.. And what did she do to my favorite bartender Rob. It's NOT 29 without him there.. There's no reason to set foot in the place now. This woman has a screw lose. It's So over priced. I'll never pay $8.00 for a cappuccino or $5.00 for a soda again. Are you kidding me? Also, when was the last time they updates the space. The 80's weren't a good look then, let alone now. The food was ok, waiters were fine, but they're clock is ticking..
Good luck to them, they'll need it..
29 Newbury is the Place to Be !!. 29 Newbury is the hottest place to be in Boston for sure. My favorite thing is the mini burgers; they are cooked to your needs perfectly every time and are a great snack! The next best thing at 29 is the waiting staff; they make you feel very warm and welcome. However the most memorable thing about 29 is its fantastic bar scene, it's great for meeting new people and a great place to have fun. I have made some of my best friends at 29's wonderful bar. It?s an absolute perfect dinning experience, for everyone. Make sure next time it's nice out to sit outside it their patio you get to enjoy wonderful food with a side order of beautiful weather. I love 29 Newbury and would recommend it for anyone young or old who is looking to have a memorable dinning experience.
Great Food. Wow- 29 Newbury is great! It's so different than it used to be. The service is fast and friendly and the food a delicious bargain. Its the kind of place that you could go to a couple times a week. They always have great fresh specials and cool cocktails. The fish couldn't be fresher. I particularly love the interesting salads abd the crabcake. Its really comfortable inside with a great bar and the patio is a great place to be seen. Also-the best burger! Love the changing artwork too.
Avoid this place.. Our party of five arrived at the restaurant on a Friday evening with great expectations. The restaurant was nearly empty and loud music played in the background. Our waitress was friendly enough, but unattentive, The food was marginal at best. The rigatoni bolognese tasted like a jar of spaghetti sauce had been dumped on it, The chicken marsala was served in chicken cubes and was dry and tasteless. When we received the bill, we were informed that the 20% gratuity had been automatically added. We would have spoken to the management about this if circumstances were different. We were entertaining and did not want to make a scene. It was noticably clear that the waitress had no incentive to provide good service, knowing that she would automatically get the 20% gratuity. I realize that all establishments deserve a second chance, but this is one that we will not be returning to any time soon!
Good Meal on Newbury.
Went on a slow night so the restaurant was empty but the bar had a decent crowd. The bar was loud and semi-obnoxious but may have been more noticeable because the restaurant was empty. Good tunes at the bar though.
The food was excellent. Had the butternut squash and apple soup which was tasty as well as an excellent lamb dish. In fact I would go back just to have the lamb, and I don't like to repoeat with the same meals very often.
Service was just ok as it was not very attentative, but as I said the restaurant was very slow. Of course that maybe should have meant more attentative service?
Overall, go if you are looking for a good meal in a semi-private booth but don't expect an out of this world overall dining experience.
Designer food keeps the jet-set coming back to this Newbury Street institution..
In Short
29 provides three distinct seating options: A small dining room that doubles as a showroom for local art; a smaller bar, favored by local fashionistas for its eclectic crowd and famous martinis; and an outdoor dining area allows fantastic views of upper Newbury Street. The upscale menu features fresh salads (arugula with dried cranberries, grape tomatoes, toasted walnuts and goat cheese) and hearty entrees (grilled lamb rack with a pomegranate juice reduction).
