The Scene
Located a stone's throw from the Back Bay T station, this southwestern themed restaurant provides area workers with a relaxed spot for an inexpensive lunch or after-work drink. Young professionals flock to the bar to enjoy nightly food specials and free chips and salsa. Well positioned TVs, exposed brick walls and cowboy knick-knacks contribute to the restaurant's casual vibe. Affable waiters are quick to deliver extra plates for those sharing massive nacho platters.
The Food
By including everything from meatloaf to chimichangas, Prairie Star's lengthy menu nimbly straddles both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Reasonably authentic renditions of classic Mexican items like smoked chicken rellenos and crunchy taquitos provide a pleasant contrast to standard fajitas and burritos. Strip steaks and salmon filets receive a kick thanks to accompaniments like honey-chipotle butter and jalapeno-avocado salsa. The appropriately named "chocolate mountain," a multi-tiered mousse cake, satisfies those looking to share a sweet treat.

We took my daughter and a friend to Boston for her birthday and stopped here for dinner. We were seated right away at a cozy spot looking out on the street. The staff couldn't have been friendlier and more accommodating (they brought her a dessert with a candle). Each of us raved about our meals (fajitas, nachos, tacos and quesadilla)... we eat tex-mex alot, but this was way above average. And the bill was agreeable too! We highly recommend it.

Kind of hidden on the South End side of Back Bay, this place has amazing prices, big portions, and you can always get a table on nights when you have to wait an hour at other places. The fajitas and burritos are both excellent. Free chips and salsa. The ribs are actually pretty good too. Definately a great value place. Food is better than the Border Cafe, and you don't have to wait 2 hours to eat.
Pros: Fast seating, GREAT prices, big portions
