The Scene
Just a stone's throw from Paul Revere's House, this prototypical North End eatery has remained successful for decades by following a simple formula: serve basic Italian fare at reasonable prices in a plainspoken, moderately romantic setting. The restaurant's musty interior (faded pictures, weathered menus) hasn't changed much over the years, but quiet, courteous waiters and attractive views of the nation's oldest public square make up for the muted atmosphere.
The Food
The gang's all here: shrimp scampi, veal piccata and chicken marsala are just a few of the many familiar Italian dishes served in the large portions and home-cooking tastes one associates with the North End. Most notable is the kitchen's lengthy selection of fresh seafood items--try the spicy shrimp fra diavolo or the house specialty Cioppino (a nourishing, endless bowl of fisherman's stew that includes clams, scallops, calamari, and crab). Leave room for homemade desserts like moist dark chocolate cake.

Insider Tips
Where to SitIf you're on a romantic date or celebrating a special occasion, try to reserve the famous table 30, a quiet little corner table that offers the best views in the house.
ParkingUnlike most of the North End's popular eateries, 5 North Square doesn't offer valet service. Your best bet is to look for parking in the financial district (try around Broad St.) and then walk about 10 minutes.
Know Before You GoDon't be surprised if you end up doing a little stargazing. The restaurant is popular with visiting athletes, as well as the occasional celebrity.

We have eaten here a couple of times, usually because other North End restaurants were full, and have had OK food. For the price, you can definitely find a better meal. On our visit tonight, which will be our last, the server was dismissive and rude. We left a 10% tip on a $100 bill. Apparently, that was not enough for him. He came out of the back holding up our check and cash and announced very loudly that 15-20% was customary. We generally tip a miminum of 20%, but felt that 10% was generous due to his forgetfulness and attitude. Needless to say we will be eating, and tipping, elsewhere in the future!

Great restaurant. Friendly owner. I really enjoyed the Verdicchio. The waiter suggested a perfect wine to accompany the meal. We were seated at the window. The view would have been great if the businesses in the area took turns cleaning the refuse from the square. Otherwise the view was good. I would return many times.
Pros: Great Food
Cons: Needs 5 minute litter pickup in front of restaurant.
