Amazing mass – We ended up at St. Anthony's for Easter after my wife walked in to visit on Good Friday. She works in the financial district and goes to the morning masses sometimes. But on Friday she went to a mass with the music there. And she came home that day still moved by it. So we packed up the kids on Sunday morning and drove in from Marshfield to go to mass there. And here I am on a Tuesday night, signing up for a City Search account so I can post a review for it.
When my wife told me about Friday, she said there was something special about the music and the mass. The priest was "normal" and talked like a "real" peson. The music was done really well and it seemed like they really meant it.
Sunday was amazing. The church was packed. They didn't skip andything, but the mass was over within 50 minutes. And the music was amazing. We go to a Life Teen mass once in awhile with our kids, and there's a band. But this was something else.
I think we may be back next weekend. My wife told everyone at our family dinner, and I'm pretty sure a few of them are going to show up too.
If you're looking for a church with something more than a regular mass do yourself a favor and check out this place.
Great music – I go every week for the music. Its the best I've ever heard, and I tell everyone about it. Worth the trip from Westboro every Sunday afternoon.
Fantastic music – Great place to worship with a welcoming environment.
best catholic music mass anywhere – Like some people, I find writing a review of a church kind of awkward. But, I've got to make a plug for this place... I came to St. Anthony's last year for Ash Wednesday. I work in the area, and just wanted to get mass over with and get my ashes and move on.
I was stunned by the atmosphere, by the music, by the sermons, by the whole place. Right there in the middle of the financial district is this shrine with all kinds of beautiful stained glass and statues. But the real find was the music.
I went to school in the south and have always had a soft-spot for gospel music. THis music wasn't gospel, but it was close. I started showing up for the weekend masses - a little out of the way (I live in Brookline) but not far off the T. Found out that every weekend, for 8 masses, they have incredible music. Sometimes the music is better than other times, but there's always something that keeps me coming back.
I really enjoy the woman in charge, who plays the piano and sings. She reminds me of a blond Norah Jones, which is weird to think about in church. When she plays, it's like she dances. I actually heard a little girl talking about that with her grandparents a few weeks ago. Last Saturday she wasn't there, but the music was still okay. The guitar gets loud and the older singer is tough to take sometimes, but the idea was there.
Anyway, I would recommend St. Anthony's to anyone looking for a church to call 'home' while in Boston. The priests/Friars are really accessible and welcoming and the whole place has a great feeling.
Great mass/music – Great music and mass today at St. Anthony's in downtown Boston. Like some of the other reviewers, we had heard from a friend that the music at Arch Street was completly new and exciting, so we had to go in and see. We were stunned to see so many people singing and really getting into mass - a Catholic mass! Great "vibe" for lack of a better term. We will definitely be back soon.
wonderful – St. Anthony Shrine is the best in Boston. We attend the 4:00 Saturday Mass and love the Music and the whole experience. My 14-year old granddaughter who is a pretty tough critic, sings her heart out during Mass. We tell our neighbors and friends that they should give the Shrine a try on the weeknd. It is a great place to be. God bless!
Engaging liturgy, great services – Beautiful shrine, great central location, convenient mass times and confession hours. Open and welcoming to LG community. Interesting/thorough course offerings from Franciscan School and services from in Spiritual Direction. Health clinic, called the Wellness Center, has great clinics and is open to all.
Great Liturgy – What a wonderful place to worship. Great music. Great preaching. great offerings from the Franciscan Adult School!
Great mass, music – Although we live in Quincy, my wife and I have been attending Sunday mass at the Shrine regularly since Easter. We both grew up in Boston and knew Arch Street as a place to catch feast day masses or to light a candle. The Fransican Friars are patient, kind, welcoming people who always seem to have time to talk.
We happened upon a weekend mass in the spring and were instantly hooked by the amazing spirit that comes through in the liturgy, particularly in the music. I've never been one to sing in church, but something about this music gets me going. Do yourself a favor and get to one of the weekend masses, especially when the woman is there on the piano.
best music/liturgy in boston – weekend mass at st. anthony's shrine is an experience you cannot miss. the priests are sincere and the new music is phenomenal. our family has been to the saturday afternoon and sunday morning masses, but we heard they have music at 8 of the weekend masses. the shrine is a must if you are in the area.
