Who knew the folks in the Financial District could rock the house?.
The Scene
Upstairs, a regular DJ spins house and dances with the voracious VIP crowd gathered at one of two small, private lounges. Work your way through a throng of grinding bodies around the bar (because there is no real dance floor) and move downstairs where the darkness and new beat (hip hop, or a little of everything) sets the tone as soon as you begin descending into what was once a large vault. Rotating purple and red lights flash around a small bar and dance floor while the door to the vault stands open and hypnotically flashes green like an amusement park ride. Should you choose to enter, you'll pass through two rooms of safety deposit boxes and couches on the way into the secret pool annex.
Who's Here
The crowd of young professionals mixes well with the college bunchbut don't expect a keg party here. While the downstairs feels slightly collegiate, the drinks, tunes and pulsating lights give the place a more Euro feel without the attitude.
Where's the exchange?. Located on 148 State Street. That's their address but it's not there. My friends and I spent such a long time looking for it and we couldn't find it. No one knew where this place was. Turns out we finally found it but 12:45 am. It's not on State Street! It's in back of State Street. So we paid a $10 cover to get in only to find that it stinks!! It's not crowded at all because no one can find this place!! We stayed there for 10 minutes because it was horrible. There were like 15 people there. If you want hip hop/reggae go to Hong Kong on the corner/upstair. Way Better!
Unpleasant/Seedy. On several occasions I have been to the Exchange, I have been charged different amounts for the very same drink. One of the bar waitresses charged me $7.00 for a Cosmopolitan on one occasion; on another occasion a different bar waitress charged me $9.00; on a third occasion a different bar waitress charged me 8.50. Additionally when I had a purchase charged to my credit card, the register tape ink was exhausted, yet they proceeded to have me sign a receipt when none of the print was visible. Also the music tends toward top 40 dance music that is tasteless at best. There is a seedy element in the downstairs (hip-hop) area. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Highly Recommeded. I went to this club on a Thursday and I went down to the Hip Hop Room in the basement. This club is of the hook. There are always madd people there and it's just the place to be. The only downside there is that it's madd hot down there, but that can easily be forgotten having a good time. I highly recommend this club to everyone.
