Editorial Review for Sakura-Bana – by Eric Grossman

The Scene
This off-the-beaten-path sushi restaurant is snugly tucked in between the Financial District's towering skyscrapers. Takeout and delivery options are overwhelmingly popular, but area professionals have been known to gather on the sidewalk out front while waiting for a table during the vigorous lunch hour. A small sushi bar and minimalist, if not bare, decor, are accented with mounted TVs displaying slides of sushi options. Service is polite and speedy.

The Food
Nearly 50 combinations of sushi rolls and 30 varieties of sashimi make for a lengthy menu packed with regular rolls and innovative creations. The locally inspired New England roll of lobster, avocado, cucumber, mayo and tobiko is a sturdy favorite, as is the bulky Sakura-bana roll with tuna, seaweed salad and avocado. Lunch and dinner boxes are good deals, incorporating miso soup, salad, rice, fruit and a choice of teriyakis, tempuras or katsu (beef, chicken, pork, salmon or shrimp).

I got takeout, ordering the Sushi Lunch, on a Wednesday afternoon. I waited FORTY-FIVE minutes for takeout!! The cashier said the sushi will be here every five minutes or so, but then she never actually went to check on it. I finally spoke up politely asking where my sushi is after 30 minutes, but after that she kept avoiding me, knowing that it was taking so long. Very inefficient service. After the long wait, I expected the sushi to be ok. Unfortunately, I got WARM HOT and SOGGY Fish, instead of the fresh cool ones that I am used to eating. I am a huge sushi fan, but NEVER will I come to this hole-in-the-wall every again.

Cons: Food, crappy service

Pretty good for the only sushi restaurant in the FD. Lines are really long at lunch, but if you go late morning/early afternoon it's pretty quick and the food tastes fresh. Good selection and not bad price.

Pros: convenient downtown

Cons: construction outside, long lunch wait
