The Scene – With rows of rustic picnic tables, high-backed booths, exposed brick and a fireplace, it's easier to imagine having a burger at Coogan's than a dance party, but both occur. During daylight hours, the pub is comfortable and serves as an after-work watering hole for Financial District suits. Once night falls, Coogan's split personality is evident by the throngs of collegiate revelers who proceed to dance the night away. – – The Draw – Although you can dine on a sizable menu ranging from burgers to fancier pasta dishes (jumbo shrimp scampi) during the day, the…

Editor's Tips

Parking:
Leave your wheels at the State Street Garage around the corner at 75 State Street.
When to Go:
Coogan's is at its best when rows of bistro windows are thrown open during summer months, but crowds flock even earlier to snag a table, so adjust your plans accordingly.
Save Money:
Pints of Miller Lite are $2 at all times.

  1. I'd like to start off by saying that as soon as you enter this bar/restaurant that you feel at home, that's mostly because of the cushy armchairs they have at every dining table, but the friendly service dosn't hurt either.
food quality
100.0% positive
  1. The food is good and well-priced for downtown - $10 lobster roll special is always great (real chunks of lobster meat, very light mayo), and so are the burgers, salads, and sandwiches($7 to $8).
service

  1. Service is friendly and professional, and nicely starched white tablecloths are a plus.
  2. terrible terrible service!
  3. Open windows, effecient service, good pub grub.
  4. All staff were rude: bouncers, bartenders, and owner.

Terrible

by ssmart1 at Citysearch

Absolutely worst place in Boston I've been! The staff are extremely rude. There are only 2 bathroom stalls so it gets very crowded. Unsecure coat check. The bouncer argued with me when I wanted to get my coat before leaving and when I finally was able to go get it I found that someone had thrown all coats on the floor and my sweater I'd put with the coat was missing. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. It's a travesty to such a beautiful city.

don't waste your time or money

by johnsmith100 at Citysearch

Other reviewers are right they just do not care at this establishment. Dirty, poor service, very unresponsive to customers. I will never go back. I even e mailed them about the issue my party had, as did other other members of the party and they did not respond to any of the e mails. No one in my party will ever go there again and I will tell any one that asks not to go there. Absolutely no respect for the customer. Customer service is unacceptably bad. Do yourself a favor go some where else. Why support such a badly run establishment?

Don't order a draft beer here.

by DaveDC18 at Citysearch

I have only been here 3 times since November 2010, but everytime I have ordered my favorite draft beer and wish I hadn't. Tastes like they haven't cleaned the taps since prohibition ended.

Menu/food was average and the bartenders were less than friendly. But nasty drafts gives me the impression that they just don't care.

Worst bartender I ever had!!!!!

by hopperr at Citysearch

I went to this place last night with some of my girlfriends and there is a bartender there with braces and she is terrible. she picks and chooses who she wants to serve first, has people waiting after they have already ordered their drink and ignores them, gives attitude and yells at people to wait a minute if you ask for a drink, gets in your face and yells as well. I don't know why this girl is a bartender because you're suppose to have patience and be nice for that tip and have people coming back for more. terrible terrible service!

  • Pros: you can join the dancefloor over to the side or be a part of the bar scene
  • Cons: the bartender with braces

Great lunch spot

by thaiboo at Citysearch

I work near there, so my coworkers and I often go there for lunch on Fridays. Note that this review doesn't apply to dinner and weekends, when the scene is different altogether.

The food is good and well-priced for downtown - $10 lobster roll special is always great (real chunks of lobster meat, very light mayo), and so are the burgers, salads, and sandwiches($7 to $8). Service is friendly and professional, and nicely starched white tablecloths are a plus. The clients are mostly corporate/downtown professionals and some tourists during the day. A safe bet for weekday lunch.

  • Pros: Food, service, tablecloth
  • Cons: Downtown prices
