Treat Regulars like CRAP! – My friend and I have been going to Sissy K's every week since September. We've had decent service there, the bouncers, DJs, and bartenders know who we are. Personally, I'm not as big of a fan as my friend but I go anyway. The past couple of weeks a co-worker of mine was in the karaoke competition. I hyped to all the people at work to come because of the great deals and what not. Last night we go to support my friend around 12:45 right before they pick a "winner," which is really just a popularity contest. They don't actually judge if you can sing or not. The bouncer who knows us lets us in and I tell him who we are there for because it is free cover if you are there for someone in the competition. The bouncer inside started to argue with me. I politely said, look we are here every week, what's the problem? He said, "You had four hours to get here." Sorry we wanted to go to another bar for once? Having been in this competition before, I know that the e-mail you receive never says there is a time limit, not to mention that is rude to say to a customer who dishes out money to your dive bar every week. Also, they lied to us and said the competition was over when I texted my friend who then told me it was not. Completely unacceptable. Clearly they don't care about their loyal customers.
Good Food, Drinks – Great place to eat. Don't let the bar atmospher fool you. Drinks were reasonably priced.
Busy Every Night – If you want to go out on a weekday, Sissy K's is the place you can count on for a crowd. Karaoke brings State Street 9-5ers in for drinks and good times. They've recently updated their song book, so now you can listen to people sing Taylor Swift and Miley. Whether that's good or bad is for you to decide.
Had a great time – I'm from Montreal and was in town for the Habs game. (we won!!) The Saturday night we went to this bar and had a great time. Seeing that we are from montreal we know how to party, and the bars are great in montreal, and this bar was really fun. Everyone was really nice. The bar is small, but it didnt really matter.
Just Awful – There was a five-dollar cover on a Saturday night. Now, usually a cover means your either getting cheap drink inside, a good scene, or good live music. Instead, patrons on the bottom floor are accosted by the sounds of a bad guitarist screeching cover songs into a microphone at a far too high volume. I would characterize the crowd as stereotypical college: state school frat boy types in ?club wear? and urban street clothes, and girls in tacky and revealing outfits. The scene was rowdy and full of people looking for short-term companionship. Overall it was a very collegiate atmosphere. They also hold your ID for ransom if you open a tab, which is something I've never encountered before and just compounded the issues here.
I could forgive all this however, if it were not for the place?s worst offense. Decent beer costs six dollars each. For all that, they don?t even serve proper pints, but rather pathetically small servings in dinky plastic cups. Now I can understand paying that much for something obscure, exotic, and with a high abv, but six dollars for two-thirds of a pint of Bass? Seriously?
I?d suggest avoiding this establishment at all costs.
best deal in town – Sissy k's is a small club, both floors hold under 200 people combined, due to the horse and carriages being parked outside it can smell sometimes like livestock. and the "it's my 21st birthday" vomitting contest is inevitable. I've only been on the weekends so I can't attest to the 40 yr old karaoke singers.. But if you get there before 9pm you won't pay a cover, you have a good chance of getting a table, you'll get at least a couple hours of the $1.50 bud or bud lite, after 10pm cheaper appetizers. There's a guitarist on the first floor and dj on second. The bar is frequented with a mixture of bachelorette parties, birthday parties, tourist and college kids. The crowd gets younger as the nite progresses, and the upstairs crowd is different than downstairs, for lack of better description upstairs is a little cheesier downstairs is more chill. It gets very busy almost always at capacity after 9:30 (but isn't that why you go into Boston) The line gets long and the cover increases as the night goes on... if you like to go to an empty place, drink inexpensive mixed drinks, not wait in line, not be entertained by musicians or people watching, the place for you is your house. People sometimes go to bars to meet other people, Heavens forbid someone actually tries to pick you up in a bar.
Abominable – Creepy dirty bathrooms, cramped, repulsive food, lousy smell, rodents!, and there isn't much going on. I have been trying to give Sissy K's the benefit of the doubt; I mean they have $1.50 drafts!! But I can't take it anymore. I'd rather spend $10 on a beer than go back to that place. It's even more disappointing that I cannot even have a conversation in there. The manager turns the music up so loud I can't hear myself think, let alone talk to someone. When I politely mentioned this, I was told to just not come back. It's a sad place overall.
Great deals on drinks....but wait, what happened to the "all employees must wash their hands..." sign – Great one dollar drinks. I go often, but the other night I walked into the freshly used mens room to witness a chef (I know he was a chef because he was wearing a dirty apron) open the stall door, run the tips of his fingers under the water for less than a second, then leave. Take from that what you might, but I will make sure never to eat their.
Avoid at all costs – This place is terrible. I went here with friends the other night and not only was there a serious lack of attractive clientele, but also a lack of decent service. The food was awful. The music was worse. Honestly, I can't remember a worse night out.
Fantastic Starter Bar! – This bar is great for kicking off a night with cheap drinks. It's esp great during happy hour when they have a free food buffet (usually two different apps) and the cheap Bud Lights. If you get in early (before 5 pm) you can usually snag a table, otherwise, this bar fills up fast. The waitstaff is friendly, though at times, tough to get a drink. The food is fantastic.
Later at night, it can get sort of sketchy. The girls behind the bar are bitchy and snobby and frankly, aren't cute enough for that sort of attitude. Once the happy hour professional folk leave later on, it fills with a mixed crowd and some regular folk. Love the two different atmospheres of upstairs and downstairs.
