Editorial Review for Lynn Woods Reservation – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
This 2,200-acre reservation, almost three times bigger than Manhattan's Central Park, was established in the 1880s as a "healthful resort" for Lynn's working population. The hills and valleys are sprinkled with small swamps and shaded by hardwood forests. Other popular activities here include birdwatching and cross-country skiing.

The Experience
Lots of technical single track in the hills around Walden Pond. The city's reservoir (not Thoreau's campground) divides the woods in half. Beginners should stick to the wider paths of gravel and feather the brakes when the going gets steep. More advanced riders should seek out the ridgeline to the north of Walden Pond. Head up Wolf Pits (bummer, no wolves) and don't let the Boston skyline distract you from the tricky ledges and huge boulders that make up the trail.

Insider Tips

The Extras

The most popular paths ascend Mount Gilead and four other hills south of Walden Pond. Climb the stone tower atop Burrill Hill for a view of Boston and the towers at the Fells to the west.

Know Before You Go

Explore Dungeon Rock, a 135-foot-deep cave once believed to hold a treasure and its unfortunate pirate. Bring friends and flashlights in case the parks department unlocks the entrance.
