Editorial Review for Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge in Concord – by Citysearch Editors
Overview
Twenty miles west of Boston is one of the outstanding inland bird habitats on the East Coast. With miles of frontage on the banks of the Concord River, Great Meadows attracts more than 200 species of birds including many species of coastal waterfowl that stray inland. Acres of forest and meadow spread over the landscape.
The Appeal
While hiking along the Dike Trail in Concord, notice the wooden boxes scattered throughout the marsh. They are nesting boxes for the colorful wood duck, which also nests in hollows and stumps in the marsh. Look also for wading birds such as the great blue heron, green heron and black-crowned night heron. The mounds of mud and vegetation protruding above the water surface in the marsh are muskrat lodges. The best time to see this nocturnal aquatic animal is near dusk or before dawn.
