Editorial Review for Mela – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
Mela's gauzy red curtains, copper wall-coverings and low lighting defy traditional Indian restaurant decor, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. Tight quarters can make the room feel a bit cramped when packed. Young professionals dine in pairs or small groups, while others wait at the small bar for take-out, a welcome option for a neighborhood that has been long starved for quality Indian fare. Helpful, attentive waiters are eager to suggest favorite dishes and appropriate wines.
The Food
While best described as modern Indian, Mela's menu also incorporates plenty of familiar favorites, such as spicy tikka masala and crunchy samosas. Adventurous offerings include pork vindaloo and batyer mussallam (pistachio-stuffed quail in spiced yogurt gravy). Those looking for a fun, interactive dining experience opt for hot stone entrees--a choice of meats and fish that diners cook themselves atop a sizzling granite slab.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE, we were very dissapointed with this restaurant after reading all those good reviews. We eat out twice a week and have not felt so unwelcome any place else. Though there was little space the restaurant was well layed out and clean. The food was average(i liked the gulob jamoon a lot). THE SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE, The waitress was so RUDE. She was rude in taking our orders, and before we could finish eating she took away our plates & fork implying we should leave now (infact we took less than 30 mins to complete our meal). The rest of the staff were really pleasing...Its just that this lady is spoiling the whole thing.
Pros: Ambience
Cons: Service, bland food

Mela is one of the best Indian restaurants I've found since moving from Manhattan. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The food is fantastic (I recommend starting with the meat samosas, then the butter chicken and lamb korma) and the wait-staff are extremely attentive. Highly recommend!
Pros: Great food, nice space, cool neighborhood
Cons: No delivery!
