Editorial Review for Z-Square – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
Z-Square's ground level cafe provides sleep-deprived Harvard students and international tourists with a quick, casual spot for a filling breakfast or a light bite (soups, salads, sandwiches and crepes dot the menu). Downstairs resides a relaxed, minimally decorated dining room and bar in which patrons enjoy creative cocktails and inviting, modern comfort fare (curried crab cakes with orange-pineapple relish, whole grilled rainbow trout, turkey burger with cranberry chutney). A shaded sidewalk patio rounds out the seating options. Young, pleasant servers patrol all corners.

My date & I went to Z Squre about 2 weeks ago. It was a Friday night but early - about 6:30. We walked in & were told we could wait for 45 min. for a table in the dining room or sit in the bar area and eat - not a problem. There are two large tables in the bar area as well as plenty of counter seating at the bar as well as all around the room. We grabbed one of the tables since we wanted to have drinks, apps, & dinner. The apps were excellent (asian dumplings & scallops) and the drinks were good (martini list to choose from). We were having an great time until the bar area started to fill up. Really it was just one party of 6 people that then began to expand by twos every 10 minutes for about an hour. Despite there being counter seating all over the room they sat in the corner at the end of our table and then proceeded to take over half of the table!! Putting their dirty glasses on it, etc. while we were trying to eat our dinner. I could see if we were just sitting there having drinks but when you see two people having dinner at a table would you seriously throw your napkin with gum wadded in it on the table?! The bartender had to come over to repeatedly bring them drinks and never once said a word to them about encroaching on the diners at the table (at one point one of them was actually leaning on the back of my date's chair!) that were paying over $100 to have dinner there. Although, he did comp my drink when he forgot about it. The herd left before dessert but by then I was so irritated we went elsewhere to finish out the night. Which was sad because dinner was cooked to perfection (steak with onion strings) so I bet dessert would have been tasty.
Pros: Interesting menu, great food
Cons: Shouldn't suggest dinner in the bar area if they aren't going to ensure your enjoyment

Z-square contains everything I love in a restaurant. There are so many options to choose from on the menu, both for food and drinks. The atmosphere is great, we were seated in the downstairs section which was set in a very comfortable lighting. Our waitress was a sweetheart and treated us great. There is also a patio and upstairs cafe area, both looked light different restaurants, but its all the same. I don't know why I never knew this place existed! Highly recommended for anyone visiting Harvard Square for dinner and drinks.
Pros: right in harvard sq., comfortable
