One Stop Shopping for All Your Counter Culture Needs.
Skateboarding will never be a crime at Harvard Squares's Proletariat. Located in The Garage, Proletariat celebrates skate culture, offering a wide range of gear (decks $49) and services, as well as city kids' art supplies: spray paint and pens ($7.99). Owner/designer/counterculture ambassador Kerry Simon focuses on his limited edition and highly collectible graphic Ts with a decidedly anti-corporate messages ("Men in denim build this country-men in suits destroy it" $28), hoodies, and even jeans. Sneakers, totes and hand-picked vintage round out the mix.
The vibe of the store is bustling but relaxed; the crowd of skaters and students, tourists and trendsetters, shops, watches videos, and makes plans to take over the world. Proletariat often sponsors events and contests, as well as putting out R.U.N., a graffiti magazine (6.99).
