What People Are Saying About Douzo

Featured Review

Contributor

In Short – One of the city's most modern Asian restaurants, Douzo serves inventive sushi rolls and wicked house cocktails in mostly black, New York lounge-style environs. Indecisive diners select from a lengthy menu of familiar and unique offerings. Fresh veggie and seafood tempura--from Japanese yam to eel--are served a la carte. Several torch and hand rolls jockey for attention, and offbeat options include the pizza roll (tomato, asparagus, cucumber wrap and shrimp, toasted with cheese).

  1. Oishii is the best sushi place in the Boston area.
  2. can order better maki and sushi from the small takeaway shop near my apartment at 1/3 of the price.
  3. Again, good sushi, but make sure you have a 2 hours blocked off on your calendar before you head in for lunch.
  4. This was my second time at Douzo: the first time I loved the food and the service.
  5. The food and decor may be the best for Japanese in Boston.
  6. Sure, the place is pretty and the food taste almost as good as it looks (What can I say.
  7. They say Japanese food is to be eaten with the eyes-- well they got that part right at Douzo, because you definitely dont want to eat their beautiful creations.
  8. would rather pay more money to eat at Oishii, to have some great quality food at least it will satisfy my ONLY stomach.
  9. Really enjoyed the overall experience, you won't be disappointed by the sashimi here - it's extremely fresh
  10. We loved the food - the sushi and sashimi was so fresh - and really beautiful - and the was tempura light and crispy.

  17. Before going to Douzo, we were big fans of sushi, but pretty much stuck to the basics.
  18. We sat at the sushi bar and highly enjoyed the chef's recommendations.
  19. Teriyaki chicken served cold, limp noodles (very microwavesque) and just average sushi in this town bursting with new sushi joints do not distinguish Douzo as the new Fugakyu (same owner) just without the drive.
  20. This town has been missing fresh sushi and I'm glad Douzo finally opened.
  21. The sushi is not as fresh as it should be.
  22. The service is prompt, friendly, and witty; the food is always good; and the bartenders, while always eager to offer suggestions, vary in their skill.
  23. Great food, friendly service, great wine list
  24. would have liked to have experienced the food and Ambience, but the moment I walked in the door with a group of 6, we were greated with a cold shoulder and a miserable hostess.
  25. Fish not fresh, good drinks/lounge place, bad daytime service.
  26. The quality of the food is bad.
  27. wines that really compliment the dishes.
  28. suggest the Lobster Sashimi for an interesting appetizer, there's no questioning how fresh it is.
  29. On top of the great food, the atmosphere is trendy but still cozy and the staff is really friendly.
  30. Searing raw sashimi and masking with rich citrus and wasabi sauces is no way to resuscitate fish that must have died weeks ago.
  31. we thoroughly enjoyed the view once we were seated to our table and found food to be incredible.
  32. Great, fresh sushi
  33. The sushi was so fresh, it melted in my mouth.
  34. The food is great and it's in the best location.
  35. The food is DELICIOUS.
  36. Everything was delicious, we ordered two fantastic apps: Filo Shrimp and Gyozo we had the Blackened Miso Cod and sushi as main courses, both were great.
  37. Everything is delicious and fresh.
  38. Great sushi, great service
  39. my favorite sushi in town, by far.
  40. This was the best sushi I have ever had and the service was great as well.
  41. Although the menu wasn't very extensive and not too traditional, my food was well-prepared and interesting (it was the first place I was served soup in a teapot!)
  42. The sushi was fresh and portions were big.
  43. admit that I am a bit of a sushi snob and Douzo is my absolute all time favorite in Boston.
  44. The food was fabulous--the sushi and sashimi were delicious and very fresh (try the japaleno roll and the spicy tuna and the spider maki).
  45. Our waiter even suggested we try fresh grated wasabi, which we did, and enjoyed.
  46. The crowd is great and the sushi is even better!
  47. After hearing that it was opened by one of the former owner's of Fugakyu (the best sushi in town) we couldn't wait to try it.
  48. We would recommend Douzo to anyone and, although we wouldn't mind trying another sushi restaurant in Boston, we can't force ourselves to stray from Douzo!
  49. Unprofessional management, frozen shumai, hair in sushi - appetizing, don't you think?
  50. disagree with another review that said the fish isn't fresh - we had the back bay and jalapeno maki, torched hamachi, escolar, madai, tilefish, toro and mirugai sashimi - all were great!
  51. the shrimp tempura roll ofcourse, and the volcano, everything is nice there.
  52. great drinks & fresh sushi & great food, excellent service and freindly hostest.
  53. If you are in the mood for good sushi and are in Boston, do not miss this place!
  54. great sushi + ambience.
  55. The fish is not fresh and I along with my friend just left it to the trash.
  56. think the place still has a few kinks to work out-- sometimes the sushi line gets really delayed, and the place tends to get positively packed on weekend nights--but it really is one of my favorite places to dine out.
  57. The spicy seafood salad is heavenly.
  58. The fish was incredibly fresh and we found ourselves loving the eel and their specialty rolls.
  59. The food was still good, but the sushi bar was running about an hour late on a Monday night!
  60. like the ambience but I am afraid the sushi and maki is sooo average.

  6. Background music is good for a lounge place-- that is, not obnoxious.
  7. a great place to bring a date.

  5. can order better maki and sushi from the small takeaway shop near my apartment at 1/3 of the price.
  6. little loud though (unavoidable given the crowd) made it somewhat less ideal for a date, but it definitely would shock + awe (particularly given the prices).
  7. been going to Douzo since they open the door for business almost 2 years ago, Im huge huge fan of Douzo.

Don't go to Douzo - Its an utter waste of time

by steve alexandris at Citysearch

The decor of the establishment is bland. It isn't particularly elegant, the service does not justify the price, and the place is extremely small. The spicy seafood salad is tiny, the rolls have too much rice and not enough sushi (an indicator of cheap ownership). The food was mediocre at best. I would not recommend it. I have eaten sushi at at least a hundred locations from California to New York, Japan, and Korea. For a truly authentic sushi place, that has healthy portions, a clean elegant decor, and excellent service, try A Table for All Seasons. Forget Douzo, its an overpriced, stuffy little place with an unwelcoming atmosphere, that has larger social aspirations than it does culinary ones.

Douzo Review

by josiebean87 , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch

Huge fan of this place, however it is a bit pricey. The location is basically right off of the Back Bay train station, therefore making it a hot spot for late night dinners practically any day of the week. Take a date here, grab some quick but good sushi, or just sit by the bar for some after work hour drinks. I've only been here on a Thursday night and business was bustling, which I like seeing over an empty and quite dining room. However this does mean you should be prepared to wait a while if you visit Thurs-Sat, so try making reservations if you can. Even waiting by the bar gets tricky on these days, since it's somewhat small and gets crowded very easily.

  • Pros: romatic settings with dim lighting, good sushi
  • Cons: pricey

Amazing Sushi!!!

by christie584 at Citysearch

Before going to Douzo, we were big fans of sushi, but pretty much stuck to the basics. At Douzo, we ordered the Omakase (where the chef creates a plate of whatever he chooses) for $70 (to split). It was the best, melt in your mouth sushi we have ever had! The fish was incredibly fresh and we found ourselves loving the eel and their specialty rolls. The service was great both times we went with our server being kind enough to explain what everything on the platter was (repeatedly!!). We would recommend Douzo to anyone and, although we wouldn't mind trying another sushi restaurant in Boston, we can't force ourselves to stray from Douzo!!!

Overrated Restaurant: style, but very little content.

by tatianista , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch

I don't hate this place, but I don't quite get all the 5-star reviews, either. I work nearby, so I've stopped in a few times (for take-out, post-work drinks with co-workers. and dinner with friends), but I have yet to be completely satisfied with my experience. Sure, the place is pretty and the food taste almost as good as it looks (What can I say. I'm a sucker for presentation), but I still think Douzo is a case of style over content, i.e. hot looks but tepid personality.

The last time I went there for dinner, our party of four was seated quickly and our order was taken within a reasonable amount of time. We waited a little longer than what might have been expected considering it was a weeknight and they weren't horrible busy but hey...these things happen. No biggie.

So the food came. It looked lovely and it was very good but hardly amazing. No one checked on our table after they served us and when it was time for the check we waited. And waited. When we finally got our waiter's attention and asked for check, he promised it immediately. Then we waited some more. Literally half-an-hour went by between clean plates and the bill, which wouldn't have been so bad had we not waited another 30-minutes (after speaking with the hostess, etc) for the waiter to return with very little apology.

If I didn't think there were a million other places in the area that I could get better sushi (or a better deal, a better atmosphere, a better experience, etc.) I might try them again. However, Since this is hardly the case, I'll leave this place to those of you who must have more time and money to waste than I do.

  • Pros: Convenient location and sleek appearance.
  • Cons: Slow service and mediocre everything else
5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended
