Editorial Review for The Charlesmark Lounge – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
Just like its namesake hotel located upstairs, the Charlesmark Lounge enjoys a primo Back Bay location but doesn't make its patrons pay exorbitant amounts for its Boylston Street address. The well-stocked bar shakes and stirs designer cocktails like tiramisu and key lime martinis. The breezy sidewalk patio is popular with tourists and local workers looking to down a beer while watching the foot traffic go by.

When I arrived at the hotel I found a small counter with a man sitting watching a computer screen I have never been to any US hotel with such a small reception area I was told to move to the lounge and wait. Later I was called back to the desk and given my room on the 1st floor /the hotel's codeword for the basement I went to the basement and found my room which was at the end of the hall next to the service alley The closet was one-foot wide and there was no dresser It was obvious that I would have to leave all of my clothes in my luggage I asked to see another room I was shown a room overlooking the street It was small and cramped but the view was better than the basement I was told I would have to wait for them to ready the room I had to wait for 3/4 of an hour before the room was ready The receptionist gave the impression that accommodating guests was a major burden and was keeping him from more important matters The rooms are extremely small-miniscule They claim the rooms are large 18 x 14 but this is misleading due to the incursion of the bathroom the hall and the adjoining rooms In my "upgraded" room the closet (3'H x 1 1/2' W) would hold about four shirts or four folded pants The room was noteworthy for the lack of drawers and storage space The room was so small with the sleeper extended there was less than a foot of space between the end of the sleeper and the wall mirror This made moving across the room almost impossible The biggest problem was the noise The hotel has a patio in the front which is contiguous with the lounge During the evening hours you can hear the blaring music and noise. Every a.m. we were awakened by the cleaning staffers chatting outside our door The hotel has no luggage storage room. The luggage is stored out in the open in full view of the lounge. A bicycle cable is attached to the luggage, but since a divider separates the reception desk from the lounge, there is no monitoring of the luggage. I would not recommend this hotel.
Cons: Rude Staff, Noisy, Small Rooms

I would assume that the person who wrote the above review has not traveled very far out of Boston in his/her lifetime. One thing that Boston is missing is a diverse music scene. The Charlesmark Lounge is one of the few places in Boston that caters to those in tune with the electronic jazz / downbeat scene. The Charlesmark is way ahead many of the other lounge venues in Boston. Visit New York, San Francisco, DC, and you will find plenty of these kinds of places. Bottom line, Boston is in dire need a more diverse music scene. I think the Charlesmark is one of the few places in Boston trying to add a different flavor to the scene.
