Locavores, rejoice! James Lionette runs his market according to the traditions of old world food purveyors, All prepared foods--from the meatballs to cold salads--are made with farm-fresh, seasonal ingredients. Lionette puts a premium on sustainability, which means you can be sure that every last scrap of lamb or pig he butchers in-house is put to delicious use. Peruse groceries, like artisanal jams, unfiltered cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and cheese (there are typically about 50 local varieties from which to choose). Nearly 200 local producers supply everything on his shelves. He’s not…

Don't go here. It is a small place and while they get a whole pig and lamb and butcher it themselves, and have assorted cuts of beef, the best stuff goes fast. I don't want to have to compete with any more customers for this outrageously delicious meat. Sure they always accommodate me when I call ahead but I enjoy the convenience of strolling in and seeing an array of organic meats to choose from. If you have not become accustomed to this level of meat, you don't know what you are missing anyway, so please stay away.

The Details on Lionette's Market

Know Before You Go:

Lionette's is the only place in Boston to buy local grass-fed beef. A whole pig and a whole lamb regularly arrive on Thursdays and are butchered in-house. Call by Wednesday to request a specific cut.

The Extras:

Catering services are available, and the store is dependably busy during the holidays. Can't get home for Thanksgiving? Make sure to place an order in advance for its turkey and stuffing.

Fun Fact:

James's parents, Mary and Bob Lionette, ran the always-busy Garden of Eden for 12 years before it closed in 2008. They always used organic ingredients in their dishes and baked goods. James keeps family tradition of careful attention to sustainability alive and well at his market.
