Citysearch Editorial Review. Though Porter Square Books is part of a strip mall boasting several big chains, the inside of this bookstore feels delightfully independent in the true spirit of Cambridge. Grad students hunch over thick stacks of poetry. Kids lose themselves to imaginary worlds through picture books. Adults browse staff picks. The front part of the store is devoted to Cafe Zing, which serves fair-trade coffee and goodies from local bakeries. Further back, you'll find an assortment of audio books for rent, shelves upon shelves of carefully chosen books, a well-stocked magazine rack and a colorful children's section.
