Editorial Review for Margaritas Mexican Restaurant & Watering Hole – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
A central, easy-to-find location in the historic Cronin's Landing building help to keep this popular and affordable Mexican eatery crowded (when the seasonal, riverside patio is open, overall capacity approaches 400). But it's Margaritas' affordable prices, generous portions and kid-friendly cuisine that make the restaurant a favorite of area families: bring earplugs and patience (expect an hour wait on weekends). Local singles gravitate to the colorful bar and its fruity house concoctions (try the melon margarita). Harried servers do their best to keep up with the hungry masses.
The Food
Straightforward, Americanized Mexican fare fills up an expansive menu. Among the starters, a bowl of Queso Fundido (a hot skillet of melted cheese mixed with salsa and seasonings) nicely complements endless baskets of homemade chips and salsa. Wise selections among the entrees include skillet-baked enchiladas (blanketed with zesty green tomatillo sauce) and massive chicken chimichangas, which benefit from a smoky red chile sauce.

As the level of food quality and service continue to escalate in Waltham, Margaritas continues to slide. The space and the location on the Charles are great, but the food and service are not at the same level. There is a large number of waitstaff always willing to sing "happy birthday" but not nearly as willing to clear your dirty plates. The food is bland and represents the fact that Margaritas is a theme park more than a restaurant. If they focused as much on the food as they did on handing out mariachi hats, they would have the best Mexican in the Boston area. Not worth the trip, unless you just want a Margarita and chips at the bar.
Pros: Margarita, chips, ambience
Cons: Service, Food

I have been to Margaritas several times and have enjoyed the food and drinks, but some of the staff are the rudest I have ever dealt with. They also now seem to cater to a smoking crowd, who surround the entrance (covering you with their filthy smoke when you try to enter) and who think their entire party can come and go from the bar for large periods of time and expect their table to be theirs when they return. The management needs to do something about this or they are going to continue to lose patrons.
Pros: food, patio
Cons: smokers, bartenders
