Editorial Review for Toast Lounge – by Leah Gourley
The Scene
Look for the fiber-optic rainbow beam coming out of nowhere, and then look down--that's Toast, a sleek subterranean grotto of a nightclub. This is by far Somerville's premiere--if not only--upscale destination. Creamy yellow brick walls and ethereal murals suggest an underground Italian wine bar. Modern touches, like curved, high-backed red velvet banquettes, create candlelit private nooks; dangling light fixtures make the rooms into dark, shadowy vaults.
The Draw
Toast isn't situated in a neighborhood with a weighty post-work crowd, so things don't pick up until the night owls come out, especially later in the week. Local young professionals enjoy the glossy digs and the singles scene that gathers steam in the late-night hours. Couples converse in the snug banquettes or nibble on appetizers (bruschetta, crab cakes) from the limited bar menu. DJs make the most of the basement acoustics with pop, techno and house tunes Thursday through Saturday nights.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThere are but two entrees on the menu, served Fridays and Saturdays only. The Independent, just a few doors down, is a great place to fuel up before visiting the club.
When to GoA raucous Brazilian-themed dance party takes over on Sunday nights, with a $10 cover and a huge crowd (ladies 18 and over are admitted).
Where to SitThe small bar at the front door is deceptive. The arched doorway to the left leads to three larger rooms and another bar.

Toast has recently finished all construction and things are once again back to normal it seems. The cozy front bar has had a face lift and looks great! nice job guys! The music room is host to some of the best local musicians six days a week. The Seamonsters are there every Sunday and the crowds pack the back room every week. I ate there this week and LOVE the new menu. The bartenders are very attentive and there's loads of draught beer to chose from. KILLER GUINNESS! It's apparent they have put a lot of work into it's transformation and it shows. I give at least 5 stars to this Union Sq gem of a venue...and there is no cover on most nights.
Pros: music lineup, bar staff, new kitchen
Cons: still hard to find if you haven't been there

The place looks great. The music was very good. The clientele was energetic and the staff fantastic. My girlfriend and I came in for drinks and were served by Neil, who I would consider to be the best bartender on the east coast.
Pros: Neil
Cons: None
