Editorial Review for Wax On Spa – by Silja J.A. Talvi

The Scene
There's nothing staid or ordinary about this spa, which caters to a self-empowered, self-possessed clientele of cute girls--and a fair number of gay and straight boys who care about managing the amount of hair on their bodies. Slogans like "What are you bitches looking at?" are on the sexy T-shirts and undies for sale that hang on the walls. Wax On's women are all about girl power, a saucy attitude and looking good.

The Services
This in-and-out day spa is aptly named, because it's the expert waxing that draws the crowds (in addition to Decleor facials and lash/brow tinting). Rooms are well-lit, spotless and sanitary, with beautiful ceiling windows. The top-notch aestheticians excel in making clients comfortable as they perform this intimate service and the resulting Brazilian waxes are worth the pain, and so thorough you'll do cartwheels in your bikini to celebrate.

The Details
Massage, manicure/pedicure, hair removal, makeup application.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Wax On recommends taking ibuprofen and an antacid one hour before your waxing appointment to minimize pain and redness.

The Extras

Try breathing quickly and sharply while inhaling as the waxing strip is peeled off--most useful for bikini and Brazilian waxes.

Brands

For a small day spa, there's a lot of good stuff here, including a range of OPI nail polishes, sumptuous Decleor products and truly affordable, lovely body care products from Ma Chere.

I've gone here for years for brazilian waxing, but I'll be taking my business elsewhere after 4 bad experiences in a row. These have included unnecessary pain with peeling (!) afterward, going home with small patches that are still obvious, or an esthetician who was just not thorough with her technique. At roughly $80.00 a pop, you really should get a top notch experience and Wax On consistently fails here. The appointment system is ridiculous. They've lost my business to other spas multiple times because you have to call them, and then wait for them to call you back . And the website? Please. I've finally decided to give up on this place.

I've had good and bad Brazilian experiences at Wax On. There was one lady that was AMAZING (I don't remember her name, but she always wore her hair in a gorgeous scarf), but she doesn't seem to work there anymore. When I made an appointment with her, I never once had any irritation. Not so with the other girls. One girl even made me physically uncomfortable. I asked her not to tweeze because it hurt, and because her face was entirely too close to my body. Instead, she insisted on doing it, because it would drive HER crazy. Excuse me?! And don't even get me started on the last girl I saw. She missed so much hair, it took me almost half an hour to go back over it myself with tweezers when I got home!!! Needless to say, she did not get a tip. I'm so incredibly disappointed in the lack of customer service and quality. I'm sorry, WaxOn, but I've had enough. I'm going to High Maintenance (heard nothing but good from them!)

Pros: One aesthetician... who no longer works there.

Cons: Ineptitude, sloppy work, no prompt call-backs
