Kendall Hotel's in-house dining offers well-executed, light and familiar fare.. The Scene
Named for the firefighters who drew the undesirable posting in this former fire station, Black Sheep affects a homey feel amid Kendall Square's outsized buildings. Just 10 tables and four bar seats occupy this corner of the hotel's front entry, so service is always swift. Antique firefighting memorabilia and colorful table settings humanize the space. Kendall guests mingle with MIT diners and, if they're smart, visitors from nearby hotels.

The Food
The menu is designed for travelers who want comfort food rather than a dining adventure, but each dish manages a contemporary flourish. Baby spinach and green apple salad is sprinkled with blue cheese and sugared pecans. An airy wedge of puff pastry tops the chicken pot pie, a satisfying blend of white chicken meat, carrots and Yukon gold potatoes. Caper cream sauce moistens the perfectly roasted salmon. Best dessert is carefully chosen fresh fruit with Grand Marnier chocolate dipping sauce, available for one or two.
