The Scene
A diverse clientele of couples and graduate-students fills the modern-gothic dining room to savor high-end comfort food. With a hipster soundtrack, bucketloads of flickering candles and stylish, tattooed waiters, this may be the coolest restaurant in town. The small bar is great for sampling from the adventurous wine list with an order of potato chips with caramelized onion dip (both homemade, both fabulous).
The Food
This is pure home cooking--if your mother was a world-class chef. Large plates of roasted-chicken pot pie and meatloaf are meals in themselves, while a delectable salad of baby spinach, grilled onions, crispy shallots and goat cheese is perfect for sharing. The burgers are phenomenal, thanks to seasoned, grass-fed beef and oven-roasted heirloom tomatoes. Three-cheese mac and cheese, served in a large crock with or without homemade sausage, will keep you smiling for days. Top desserts include ginger-pear cake and chocolate pumpkin-bread pudding.

The Zon's web site claims that their comfort food "will keep you smiling for days...". If by smiling they mean praying to the porclain gods all night and experiencing symptoms akin to Typhoid fever, then this statement is accurate. AVOID this restaurant at ALL COSTS. Me and my friend shared an Artisan Cheese Platter and the Macaroni & Cheese entree. We both fell extremely ill hours after eating at Zon's. The Massachusetts Board of Health was then called in to inspect the kitchen. The Board of Health inspector discovered that Zon's Restaurant had a broken dishwasher and Failed them. As a result of eating at Zon's me and my friend became severely dehydrated requiring IntraVenous treatment to replenish our bodily fluids and were diagnosed with Gastroentinitis. To the restaurant go-ers of Boston, consider this a friendly public service announcement to AVOID ZON'S RESTAURANT at ALL COSTS. We contacted Zon's on many occasions and heard nothing back. So not only do they serve unsanitary food to their customers they don't take responsibility for their actions.

This spot -- formerly one of my favorites -- was a major disappointment . The servers were inattentive to the extreme (just try to get your water glass refilled - go ahead, try!) and the food was poorly prepared (e.g., my burger was as dry as the desert and fries were completely uncooked). Sad to say that you could find a better burger at a place like Game On in the Fenway.

Not really sure how to even write this - I used to LOVE Zons! I took a friend over on an impulse back in February I think it was ... we walked by the window and of course it was full and enticing as usual - but when we got to the door - there was an exodus of 7 people who said very discreetly - "do not go in! - we waited and waited for everything and dinner was 2-3 hours " - I couldn't imagine! so we walked in anyway. There was no one to greet us - odd. I looked into the dining room which was full - but NO ONE had any food on their plates they were ALL waiting for something - it looked like a scene from a restaurant photo shoot - too neat - no food!!! I have not heard any negative buzz in town - but I am afraid to go back - quite frankly I'd be embarrased to rave about it then take a friend - or worse a group and have a zero service miserable experience - it was very very strange - I do hope it was just an "off night" some weird thing when several staff just couldnt make it - but I remain hesitant to try again.
