Editorial Review for Teatro – by Patricia Harris & David Lyon

The Scene
The 15-foot arched ceiling of this deep hall--originally a synagogue--sets a Fellini-like tone for owner Jamie Mammano's hip but laid-back trattoria. An energetic blend of the well-heeled (neighborhood condo owners) and the well-preened makes Teatro one of Boston's best scenes. Servers know both menu and wine list backwards and forwards, and correct your Italian with such a smile that you don't mind.

The Food
Mark up another Boston success for contemporary Italian cuisine. Antipasto for two is a two-foot feasting plate of Tuscan tapas, including eggplant caponata, mussels with minced sweet peppers, and bruschetta with roasted red peppers and piquant anchovies. Rigatoni Bolognese is served Italian-style, with the firm pasta coated, not smothered, in a salty sauce of tomatoes, pork, veal and beef. Bitter greens make a perfect foil for unctuous pork shank braised in Marsala and the accompanying mashed sweet potatoes. Desserts are limited--choose the delicately inebriated rum cake.

What to Order

Nearly two-dozen wine choices by the carafe (half-bottle) allow diners to switch wines with each course.

Save Money

Appetizer menu pizzas are perfect for splitting as a first course, but also make a fine light supper for one.

I work in the restaurant industry and give exceptional service so i expect the same when I dine in upscale establishments. My fiance and I were celebrating our two year anniversary. I requested a bottle of champagne for the table and our server never once acknowledged our special occasion, never introduced herself and was very unattentive. She walked by our dirty dishes numerous times and bread was served with the appetizers. After we finished eating the appetizers she walked by several times before taking our dinner order. When presenting us with the dessert menu she placed it at the table and quickly walked away. It was just very unimpressive and a letdown as far as the service. The food however was an 8 out of 10 and I was pleased with the martini and wine selection. I wish there were more dessert wines and ports. Overall I don't have too many complaints. Request a booth, the tables and chairs were odd.

Cons: service was terrible

I used to really love this place when going with my girlfriend before a show or with clients. It is very nice inside and the service is very good. However, the food has gotten much more average over the past couple of years, which is dissapointing. I will agree with the best calamari statement though! It is a nice atmosphere but I wish that the food was as good as it was a couple of years ago..
