Caution- four legged friends. They have four legged, fast moving friends. Although the martini I had was good (Rainbow Martini), I can't go back to this place after seeing several insects!
TERRIBLE PLACE, DONT WASTE UR TIME OR MONEY, VERY RUDE PEOPLE. THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE.... THE WAIT STAFF ARE VEY SLOW. I WENT THERE @ 9PM WITH MY BROTHERS GF, HE WAS WORKING.... MY BROTHER SAID THE FOOD WAS GREAT, BUT HES ONLY BEEN THERE WHEN HES BEEN BLASTED DRUNK... WHEN WE WENT IN, THE PLACE WAS DEAD, LIKE 8 PEOPLE IN THE PLACE. ARE SERVICE WAS VERY SLOW. Ladies Night...not free, but still a good deal.. Seeing that there hadn't been a negative review about Ladies Night in a while, we decided to try it. I called for the details and was told up front that there would be a free 3 course meal with a $10 minimum drink purchase per person. This sounded reasonable so we made a reservation for 6:30. When we showed up the host kindly explained that even though we had a reservation, we had to sit at the bar for a half hour because "that's how it works." I asked if we could order our drinks at the table and she said no because that's how they do ladies night. The drinks were $10 each, but good sized and tasty. After exactly a half hour I went back to the host stand and specifically told her that we've been at the bar for a half hour and would like to be seated now. She said she'd get us in a few minutes and she did at 7:07. (Not bad..) The food was great. We ordered the spinach dip appetizer which we knew would cost extra but it's so good and the salad, steak tips and dessert. The 3 course meal was quite good and our server was terrific. He automatically added 18% gratuity to our bill and so with 3 martinis 1 appetizer and two 3 course meals, our bill was $53.00 total. We may do this again, and if we do we will definitely call ahead again (people were waiting much longer than us) and then if we order an appetizer we'll do it at the bar while we wait out the mandatory half hour drinking period. And ladies... don't expect to meet too many guys at ladies night.. aside from the men working there.. it was a completely female crowd.
WORST SERVICE - AVOID at all COSTS. good humus, but bad service, will not go back even if the meal was free. The only problem is that it is one of the few places open till 5am in boston. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Extra Extra! News is the BEST!. News is a great place for a number of reasons: GREAT FOOD (try the spinach and artichoke dip and the salads), very friendly service from the bouncer outside to the waitstaff, very comfy atmosphere, and tasty drinks. As far as the people that complain about the waiting...do you know anywhere else you can go after 2am for really tasty food (and i'm not talking about the food carts that line the streets by fanueil hall at closing time)? I didn't think so...of course there will be a wait after the clubs and bars get out...but they most definitely don't "favor" clubbers over anyone else...and if someone knows the bouncer...i'm sorry but that's life...that happens everywhere. If you have a problem with it..SPEAK UP! Also, I've never had the tip automatically tacked onto my bill. Don't believe the hype about News not being a great place...I've been going there since it opened and i've never been let down and I don't forsee that ever happening. If you want a great place to go with cool beats to listen to and some delicious food to go along with it...go to News!
Horrible Ladies Night experience.
The host made fun of me as soon as we walked in for seeming "cranky." Then he insisted we sign in. wtf? He said we would have to wait 20 min which turned into 45. We very politely asked him what was up, and he said he would check on the table, and then he DIDN'T GET BACK TO US. Finally after 1 hour we left. ONE HOUR. When I said we were leaving b/c we waited one hour, the guy disputed that we had waited that long. It had been 57 minutes. They were disgusting.
Valet costs money even though they say it's free. WTF?
My mojito had extra-small mint bits so it was hard to drink.
My friend and I left and got take out pizza, which was fabulous!
NEVER GO TO NEWS!
LadiesNight, not worth the free 'FOOD'.
Tried out the News Ladies Night this past Wednesday and it's probably the worst Boston restaurant I've ever been to. Service is horrendous, the guy at the front is a sleaze, the place looks cheap, and some of the waitstaff had no idea what they were doing.
VALET IS NOT FREE eventhough it's posted on their website AND my girlfriend called before we headed out to confirm it. 5 bucks is nothing for valet but lying is unacceptable.
When we got there, the same guy said we didn't have reservations which is another outright lie b/c we made it the night before for 6 people!!!!
We waited over an hour before we were seated. They just want to make money off of you with the drinks that you buy while waiting since dinner is 'free'. I wouldn't mind the waiting, but I had made reservations!
They should have smaller plates with the amount of food they put on. Salad - measly lettuce with pieces of olives and feta. Steaktips and fries - mediocre, I've had better at a local fastfood joint. Dessert -you call a dollop of pudding/whipcream and crumbs dessert? In the end, I was still hungry. They tack on an 18% gratuity as well.
This is probably one of the worst marketing schemes to get your own restaurant out the gutter.
Try the green monster!. Our bartender was very ncie, a makes a great martini. The banana split martini was outstanding, and followed it up with our bartender's specialty martini the green monster. If you like fruity martinis this is the one to try, tastes and smells like a Sweetart! They also have homemade chips on the bar that were out of this world.
Restaurant-lounge-diner-cafe stays open deep into the night in the Leather District..
In Short
With its page of martini options, a slew of appetizer plates and an efficient, black-clad waitstaff, News obviously targets young professionals. The spacious front room has a modernist sass, while the bar makes the back room narrow, ensuring body contact on a busy night. The menu offers plenty of upscale comfort fare, from burgers and steak tips to Cuban sandwiches and chicken spring rolls, as well as late-night breakfast fare (seven-ounce sirloin with eggs).
Dissapointed with favoritism!!. Been there one time early in the morning on a weekend. Not a very pleasant experience. Mostly they cater the nightclub crowd with big numbers after the bar session in the early morning. I saw a guy wearing suit he is regarded as manger or owner, everybody was kind of his fan with or without any reason just to get in. It's up to them who they will let in or who not to. I stopped by to have a breakfast but since I didn't know anybody even after waiting for almost an hour they didn't let me in. It's just a nightclub type thing. A group of five young women were pushed out because they didn't know anybody. I was not mad however disappointed to see their manner, favoritism and professionalism. Boston is an extremely civilized city. In Brookline and Cambridge I see it it's totally opposite. Probably this one is geared towards the nightclub crowd or nightclubber that's why it's not very sharp and people friendly. If you are going there just for food on a weekend morning you may get a chance however if you are to impress your girlfriend or friends from family or school definitely this is not the place. I would rather wake up at 6 in the morning and go to a better place where they will be glad to serve a nice and clean breakfast with a copy of Sunday edition Globe and a smile.
