Editorial Review for Matt Murphy's Pub – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
Matt Murphy's is that rare Irish pub more conducive to dining than drinking. Students, couples and local characters flock to this rustic, inviting spot for stellar Irish dishes and live entertainment. On busy weekend evenings, all nine tables are filled and the small, standing-room bar (there are no barstools) packed. Free nightly music (from folk to open jazz sessions) starts at 10pm, provided by musicians or DJs crammed into the back corner. Friendly Irish bartenders and waitresses switch jobs regularly to help keep the masses happily fed.
The Draw
For the O'Briens and McCarthys among us, the menu reads like a list of comfort food favorites. Hearty shepherd's pie (made with flavorful lamb) and pork sausages with white beans hit the spot, especially in winter. Almost everything's homemade, and prices are more than reasonable. Don't miss the fresh fish and hand-cut chips, which are served wrapped in yesterday's Globe and come with deliciously tangy homemade ketchup.

I love Matt Murphy's and I've taken many friends here for drinks and to listen to the local bands that they often have playing. However, the food is quite expensive, but then again it is pretty good. Try the the fish and chips! The decor has a really warm feeling and makes you really feel like you are in an traditional Pub. The room can get quite crowded on weekend nights, but that makes the experience all that much more fun. I've had many very random conversations! If you are in Brookline Village or are looking for a truly relaxed Pub with a semi-upclass feeling give Murphy's a try.
Pros: Food, atmosphere, drinks
Cons: Price of Food

I've been a Matt Murphy fan since it opened and have found the food, whether casual or more complicated always good and sometimes surprisingly so. It's convenient and offers a fine selection of nibbles to have with a great selection of beers. Frequently crowded, it doesn't have the ambience for a romantic dinner but is great for pals getting together. The staff is always helpful and lots of fun. My only complaint is that the kitchen isn't open past 10 pm during the week! Brookline Village could use a good late night kitchen guys and this one would be ideal. Musical acts are a terrific plus and table sharing makes for some interesting conversations. Lunch here is quiet and pleasant and I always recommend it to folks from outside the neighborhood.
Pros: Great location, excellent food surprising for a bar, great staff
Cons: Lots of noise, can be a long wait for a table, kitchen closes at 10 pm
