Editorial Review for Bikram Yoga – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
With a strong background in hatha yoga, Bikram Choudhury spent years with doctors and scientists perfecting his own system. In 1974, he opened the Yoga College of India in Beverly Hills. The method is a rigorous and demanding workout that will put even highly trained athletes to the test. A 95-degree studio keeps students sweating while they perform a series of 26 traditional asanas (poses) in reps, with continuous verbal direction from attentive teachers. Every muscle, joint, organ, and pore is affected. It isn't particularly peaceful in the moment, but afterward, you'll feel utterly transformed.
The Classes
Arrive at least 10 minutes early for your first class; bring a large towel (to lay over your sticky mat), a washcloth (you'll get slippery during class), and a bottle of water. Classes last 90 minutes and should only be done on an empty stomach.

Bikram is a tough workout, but there are much more pleasant places to practice with more educated, and kind teachers. (Try Yoga for You in West Roxbury-a clean studio with tons of free parking.) I went to this studio just once a year ago to check it out. The carpeting was gross, the instructor/drill sargent wouldn't let me leave the room to get more water, and though they say they have showers, there is one for all to share and the line was 10 people long when I left. The class was full on the Saturday I went so they must get a fair share of people who don't mind the conditions and lack of parking. I'm shocked they are still getting away with this.
Pros: Bikram
Cons: I get nauseated thinking about them.

First of all, the SMELL of this place should've sent me packing. Well, it almost did. I walked in to the reception area and there were a few people signing in before me...I stood back thinking "I have to get out of here, the smell is sickening." But I stayed because I was dying for some Bikram. OMG, the place is a total dump. If the smell of old-gym-bag x 1000 doesn't knock you out, being bumper to bumper in a tiny room will. There is no space to take off your shoes or move around in reception, and in class, the guy next to me actually DRIPPED on my mat. Now, I'm all for sweatin' it out Bikram style, but please, give enough room in the studio so people don't sweat on each other. That's just gross. They cram 30 people into a tiny studio and call that "sold out." They should probably try "sold out" at 20. The spots towards the street are awful on a sunny day--you're too busy squinting and tilting your head out of the sun to concentrate. The room is too hot and too humid; but maybe that is because I normally practice in Arizona. Bottomline, if you're desperate for some Bikram and you can tolerate the AWFUL smell and some stinky guy dripping on you and a generally unpleasant atmosphere, go. But if you have another option, take it (I heard Yoga Crossing in Waltham is good and has hardwoods instead of carpet). Oh, and the instructor wears a head-set, a la Madonna? Give me a break. Maybe the Material Girl owners should take some of those $20 fees and put them towards a ventilation system and some hardwoods. Peeeeeeeeeeeeew.
Pros: Bikram. Brad is a good instructor.
Cons: Facility is gross, tiny and overcrowded.
