great mix of artists. I've been coming to Regattabar for over 10 years, and have to say, they really spend time finding the best local, national, and international talent. In any given week you might find a jazz legend, a latin big band, or a down home blues show. Also, the staff and service has gotten soooo much better in the past few years. It's really an enjoyable place to hear music, and to be right on top of the artists as they play. Keep up the good work!
Best Jazz in Boston. Regattabar is the only venue in Boston to catch the best jazz in the world. It's right in Harvard Square and it has a lovely ambiance. I've lived in Boston for 4 years and I'm an avid lover of jazz, especially the contemporary scene. The best bands, including the Dave Holland quintet, Dave Douglas, Kenny Garrett, Mark Turner, Chris Potter, etc. all come through Regattabar every year. This is their only stop in Boston. So check their website, and don't miss the opportunity to see jazz at its finest. Unfortunately, if you like this kind of music, this is the only place to hear it
An elegant club whose upscale setting complements its soulful, jazzy musical offerings..
In Short
Just as one would expect from a club set inside the classy Charles Hotel, Regattabar's interior is cozy, comfortable, dimly lit and relaxing. It's recommended for tickets to be purchased in advance (many shows sell out, especially the big-name acts). The music schedule's emphasis is on soft sounds, which might include Brazilian jazz, blues or gospel.
many cons. The only good thing about this place is that you are pretty much guaranteed to be close to the performer. That said, the service is awful. I've never seen so many miserable rude waitresses! The drinks are weak and over-priced. Also, I orderd a $7 bowl of mixed nuts and it tasted like they took out from in front of a smoker at the bar!
Bland atmosphere, terrible sightlines. This bar gets some of the biggest names in Jazz, but I think it is only because there is no other place to play. It is a generic-looking hotel function room turned into a Jazz club. The stage is not elevated, so you better hope you don't sit behind tall people. During quiet moments of the performance you can hear the bartenders digging into the ice bins to make drinks. This place points out the need for a cool, hip, smokey, Jazz club like the old days.
Substance on a budget!. I can't believe thatr I can get to see such great entertainment up close for around $20! While other venues soak you for inane performances by musicians who owe most of their acclaim to electronic manipulation, Regattabar presents sophisticated performances up close at an affordable price.
Awful. The process of getting tickets is an absolute nightmare! Regattabar will not mail your tickets or allow you to pick them up, though you must pay for them and then stand in line the night of the event to pick them up!!! I kid you not. It is the craziest system that I have ever seen. Seating is awful with chairs everywhere and you can die of thirst waiting for a drink. Once was enough for us.
