Editorial Review for University Mall – by

You've Got the Look
University Mall was just the second major mall in Tampa, built in the early '70s and originally called University Square Mall. Time was in danger of passing it by when it closed for extensive renovations a few years ago and reopened with its streamlined name. Once you're inside, you can hardly tell it's the same mall.

The Goods
The second story, which consists mostly of an excellent food court and the entrance to the 20-screen movie theaters, is all new. The movie facilities are among Tampa's best, with large theaters for first-run movies and intimate rooms for older or more artsy films.

Huge new malls have their appeal, but it's also kind of nice to be able to comfortably explore the entire length of a mall. You can do that here. Another perk of University Mall is that the entire surrounding area is packed to the gills with all sorts of shopping and restaurants. University Collection, adjacent to the mall, has specialty shops, several great restaurants, and a dollar movie theater.

This mall should be condemed. The hallways smell like dirty mold, and there are very few major retailers left. The existing stores are made up up urban club wear and zoot suit retailers with names like Mr. Man and Glam. Make sure you are armed if you choose to go on the weekend, because robberies and shootings are common. Check the news, it's right in the middle of Tampa's only real g*etto. Even their anchor stores know better than to stay.....Macy's, Dillard's and JC Penney have all began the process of moving to a better area. If you want a good shopping experiance, check out Hyde Park, Citrus Park Town Center or International Plaza.

Pros: Screaming low income children??lol/jk

Cons: Everything
