Small plates, wine flights and river views delight the inveterate sampler..
The Scene
Zephyr has the cookie cutter hotel-Deco look. But the view of the Charles River is far from standard-issue. Grab a terrace table if the weather permits.
The Food
Yes, you can order a large plate of roast chicken or a grilled steak, but it's more interesting to assemble a meal from several of Lynette Mosher's "small" plates (i.e., the size you should eat), all under $10. Intensely green sweet pea crepes wrapped around chunks of lobster and avocado are simultaneously sprightly and satisfying, while the most committed carnivores will relish the sliced leg of lamb with chickpea fries. A nest of soba noodles with spicy sauce brightens up the austere, but perfectly steamed halibut in banana leaf. A couple of small dishes go a long way, especially since desserts are rich and big. Our favorite is the shortbread with lemon curd, berries and real whipped cream. Wine, beer and martini flights extend the "sampler" theme.
Poor service, mediocre food, poor value.
I went here for Valentines Day with my girlfriend, which of course means an overpriced prix fixe menu. Going here was a poor choice made in ignorance.
Service: I had to poor our wine throughout the meal and had to ask to have my water refilled. Our empty plates sat on the table after each course for at least 15 minutes.
Mediocre food: The food was not bad; it was cooked to order and was not gross. My filet was properly rare and everything was still warm when it reached the table. It was, however, nothing special, and definitely not worth the price.
View: You have a view of an uninteresting part of Brookline and BU. This is located too far up the Charles to see Boston well.
Poor value: Even given that you pay more for ambience and service than food, this place was not worth its price.
The Zephyr. I absolutley loved the food! The staff was incredibly nice- easy to carry on a conversation with. The food was a little high priced for the portions that we got- but incredible just the same! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. I am not a fan of seafood- but the scallops were awesome!!!!
