Editorial Review for Newport – by Citysearch Editors
The View
America's oldest resort still draws in summer crowds desperately seeking to recapture some of the town's early Victorian charm. Come summertime, groups of 20-somethings rent area homes and hit the town in "party mode."
The Experience
Newport's mansions are renowned for their refined opulence. The Breakers is the most famous of these, comprising 70 rooms (nearly half for servants) that incorporate rare marbles, mosaics, frescoes, gilt bronze and elaborate plasterwork in their design. Visitors take the Cliff Walk for a seaside tour of some of the town's other magnificent mansions, but in reality, get a better view of the magnificent rocky coast and Atlantic. For those who prefer modern-day fun, Newport hosts two of the greatest music festivals in the country every year: Fort Adams State Park fills with music junkies during its Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival. The park also hosts multitudes of kites and sunbathers most summer days.

It's amazing to see how the other half lived and in some cases still does. All to the background of ocean breezes and quaint homes.
