Editorial Review for Biking on Martha's Vineyard – by Jose Martinez
Overview
Bike paths stretch from ferry terminals at Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven to Edgartown. Bike rentals abound in both towns; scenery is different.
The Experience
The Oak Bluffs route passes gingerbread cottages and follows State Beach. Swim in the sheltered Sengekontacket Pond on either side of Nantucket Sound. Avoid the fenced-off sections of dune where the endangered piping plovers keep their nest. The Vineyard Haven route is more landlocked but offers a quick shot into the island's interior and Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, where even more paved paths roll gently through pine and scrub oak. Off-roaders should watch for poison ivy in the park. In Edgartown, keep an eye out for celebrities and an ear out for mopeds--even on the bike paths. Another bike trail picks up on the other side of the shopping area and follows Katama Road down to South Beach.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoEven though the bike paths do not venture out to the dramatic cliffs of Aquinnah or past John Belushi's grave in Chilmark, the roads tend to be less congested with cars. But beware of those pink school buses.
When to GoThe island is at its uncrowded best just after Labor Day.
The ExtrasCheck out one of the island's most popular spots for sun and surf.
