The Scene – The Charles Street Inn is housed in an updated 1860s Victorian townhouse. With only nine rooms (spacious ones), the inn retains old-world charm, with decor like marble fireplaces, period lighting, oriental rugs, ornate detailing and either antique or reproduction furnishings. This is the perfect quiet, quaint escape from the city's chain hotels. – – The Details – The nine rooms are each named and decorated for a specific Beacon Hill artist. There are also modern amenities including a whirlpool tub, individual climate control, mini-refrigerators, cable TV…

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
Looking for a quiet, romantic spot for a meal? Head down the street to Torch, where candlelight and copper walls provide atmosphere.
Parking:
Valet service must be arranged in advance. Otherwise, the largest and most inexpensive place to park is the Boston Common Garage, located down the street.

Outstanding Historic Inn

by kestlesmom at Citysearch

On one of the coolest streets in Beacon Hill is this private, quiet little gem. Each of the nine rooms has been stunningly decorated and named for a historic figure. We stayed in the Henry James room, a king with canopy. After seeing 7 of the nine rooms we would have been happy in any of them. Having stayed in 5 star hotels all over the world, Paris, Beijing, Vienna, this Inn rivals the best in detail while being true to an historic ideal. Within a half a block from the front door are wonderful shops, bars and restaurants. A perfect location to leave the car and explore by foot or subway. They have therapy tubs and a fireplace in every room! A true taste of the Victorian era with all the modern conveniences. We will be back! Lisa, Kestlesmom

The best of the best in Beacon Hill.

by PMB213 at Citysearch

I recommend the Inn to all my friends and guests from out of town. The owners individualize each persons stay and assist with everything. They are well known and respected in the neighborhood. Please let them recommend dinner choices.

The rooms are taseful and luxurious. An oasis in the midst of Beacon Hill. Home made breakfast baskets delivered to our door, fireplaces, spa tubs, marble, glorious antiques. I am a local but stay there for a real treat such as the Christmas walk. Superior in every way!

  • Pros: Service, anbience, location, room decor.

HIGHLY recommended!!

My daughter and I stayed at the Inn for 8 days recently. I must say it's interesting hearing other experiences...I cannot fathom the scenario described from the negative comments given our experience. The rooms were impecably maintained, clean and extremely comfortable. From the jacuzzi tub where my daughter spent an hour each evening and morning, to the robes that were beautiful and soft, to the bed which was easily as comfortable as ours at home, the Inn was one of the highlights of our trip. They also heat the breakfast danishes in the morning...something I have not found common in many other places. As for the service...anything we requested was brought promptly to our room. We've already recommended this place to friends and will continue to do so!

BEWARE.....

by eseasons4 at Citysearch

My adult daughter and I stayed in two different rooms in nov. of 2006. olmstead room had crusted and stained coverlet on bed, hair under pillow and tv with constant buzzing noise. Self-cleaning jetted tub did not work. Faucet leaked all over vanity and onto floor in bath causing an accident. We were told that the inn knew of the problem and had scheduled a plumber for the next day.

We asked to be moved to another room. The Alcott room was dirty, dusty and had trash on bathroom floor. The thermostat did not work and the refrigerator door was difficult to open. Expired cream in fridge had crusted and leaked all over the place. Promised rollaway at no extra charge was inflatable rubber thing on floor.

Owner never contacted us after many requests. We were never told how much the second room would be.

No itemized final bill was presented upon checkoout nor was one quoted after I returned home after many requests.

Owner finally agreed to speak with me on one of my numerous calls. She insinuated that we caused the faucet to leak and said they were charging me extra person charge of $50 per nite for use of ?rollaway?.

an apology was never given for our inconvenience or pain and suffering. a bottle of wine was offered upon learning of the accident. that would have gone well with the 800mg ibuprofen four times a day.

in my opinion, this place deserves no awards for 'best of anything'. shame on them for knowingly putting us in a potentionally unsafe room. they should not be allowed to open their doors.

thank goodness for visa. they made it right.

  • Pros: breakfast is average
  • Cons: unsafe, unclean, and uncaring proprietor

Great Stay

by orioles at Citysearch

We stayed for our 10th anniversary and everything was fabulous. We had the Henry James room the bed was high and comfortable. The bathroom was modern as was the bose radio, but everything else had that historic feel right down to the creeky chest of draws. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and the staff was very accommodating. Can't wait to save some money for the next special occasion.

  • Pros: comfort, historic, accommodating
