Editorial Review for Jae's Brookline – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
Celebrity Chef Jae Chung's Brookline outpost serves his acclaimed cuisine to the dressed-down couples and families that populate the surrounding neighborhood. The large dining room gets a much needed jolt of color from a large tropical fish tank, and patrons can also park it at a tiny sushi bar. The front bar area is popular with solo diners looking to catch the big game. Service in all corners is friendly and attentive.
The Food
Jae's exhaustive menu includes contemporary interpretations of Japanese, Korean and Thai favorites, as well as dozens of items from a top-shelf sushi bar stocked with such rare varieties as toro (fatty tuna belly) and giant clam. Many diners opt to kick off their meal with an order of scorpion maki rolls or lobster spring rolls, while Korean Kalbi (marinated beef short ribs) and cloyingly sweet shrimp Pad Thai also prove popular. Desserts include creamy ginger and green tea ice cream.

Arrived about 45 minutes before a Sox game on a Thursday night. Seated almost immediately (booth next to the large fish tanks). Ordered quickly and asked for fast service and we got it! Coconut shrimp, Pad Thai and Mango chicken were all excellent. Waitress knew we were in a hurry so she brought the dishes out as they were ready, which worked out great. When she was a few minutes late picking up our check, another of the wait staff came by and grabbed it. Even though we walked to Fenway (we were stuffed and wanted to) and there was a crowd at the gate, we still arrived before the bottom of the first. Now that's fast service! I have been to Jae's many times in Boston and Brookline. The food is consistently good, the service great and the atmosphere pleasant if not particularly romantic. I highly recommend it to diners who like to mix and match Asian food in a casual, friendly environment.
Pros: great eclectic Asian menu, friendly waitresses, good service
Cons: not especially romantic decor (but clean and pleasant)

Appetizers were good, nicely arranged and tasty. Those of us who drank cocktails liked them! The rest of the food, however, was rather average in both presentation and taste. It took us two attempts and about 10 minutes to make waitress stop at our table. Once she "found" us she was nice and fast. Also Jae's could *really* use a helping hand of an interior designer. If you are looking for a romantic spot, look elsewhere!
