Colorful fish tanks, framed butterflies, cream colored walls and metallic fans conspire to set a distinctly romantic mood, much to the satisfaction of the many young couples who stop in before a show or after a study break. For the uninitiated, Brown Sugar's epic menu provides a flavorful intro to the pleasures of Thai fare. Experienced diners revel in authentic preparations of favorites like choo chee fisherman (seafood with a kaffir lime-spiced curry sauce) and masaman curry. Newbies can select from dozens of not-too-spicy, not-too-foreign options like crunchy spring rolls and cloyingly…

Save Money:
Stop by daily before 3pm for any one of the bargain lunch specials--about 50 dishes are available for under $7.
The Extras:
Takeout orders can be placed online, but even more convenient is delivery to your door for a pittance
When to Go:
When there's a sold-out show down the street at the Paradise, the restaurant can be overrun by a surge of rock fans, ensuring spotty service and long waits.
Know Before You Go:
The huge menu has something for everyone, particularly vegetarians (a group that is ignored by many of the neighborhood's nondescript college joints).

  3. It has a romantic outlook.
  4. Beautiful decor, great thai food, wonderful atmosphere, great service.
  5. Located on Boston University's campus (West Campus if you're interested), Brown Sugar Cafe offers a huge menu, good food, pretty good prices, and a classy atmosphere.

  1. The food was outstanding - their khao soi (a Northern Thai yellow curry with crispy and soft noodles) was spot-on, just as I've eaten in Thailand, and the spicyness was just right.
  2. The food was some of the best Thai and Vietnamese I have had in the city.
  3. We ordered a variety of items (fresh spring rolls, ribs, pad thai special of the day and spicy pork & green beans) they were all lacking in flavor, spice and culinary skill.
  4. The water glasses never stay empty, the dishes are well worth their price - the roast duck curry is amazing!
  5. The Thai iced tea is delicious here, not too sweet.
  6. Outstanding food and service
  7. find this to be another Boston restuarant serving moderately good food (I have eaten there before) geared to students who the restaurant considers not worthy of reasonable service.
  8. But the food is SO good that I still go back despite bad service.
  9. straight-up, if you live in or visit Boston, and claim to like Thai food, you need to hit place up ASAP.
  10. love the fish tank and authentic Oriental decoration.
  11. good food, sub-par service
  12. my personal fav is the roast duck red curry, although one time it was on a sweeter side of curry (which i like) and one time it was like szechuan spicy.
  13. The service is pretty decent, and the food is really yummy!
  14. Whoever claimed this place has bad food, needs to have their tastebuds checked.

Cute place for pad thai

by gethebassics , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch

The atmosphere and decor of this place surpasses all the other ethnic restaurants in the area!! I love the fish tank and authentic Oriental decoration. The service is pretty decent, and the food is really yummy! It's a bit pricier than takeout places like S&I, but the pad thai is to die for. They also have some sort of special Thai milkshakes or smoothies or something that my friends all love. I believe they also serve alcohol here.

Great Food but expect to be rushed

by DavisSqVillen , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch

I have been to both of the Brown Sugar restaurants but most recently to the Comm Ave location. The Thai food here is excellent, my favorite dish is the sizzling platter with scallops and shrimp prepared right next to your table and served immedaitely. Its quite a sight when its brought over and I suggest you take advantage. The pineapple-based rice dishes are also very nice with really cool presentation.

My problem with Brown Sugar is that its so cramped on Comm Ave I wonder if they even have the room to prepare the dish tableside. You're practically sitting on top of your neighbors and your food will arrive almost immediately after you order on a busy night. also, don't expect to sit after dinner, your waiter will ask to clear plates the minute they're remotely empty.

The restaurants concern for turning over tables makes for an uncomfortable experience - so I don't usually go unless I plan on eating, paying, and getting out in under 30 minutes.

Can't say i'm a huge fan, but maybe on Tuesday nights its a little more civil. Check out Khao Sarn in Brookline if you're looking for something a little slower (albeit out of the way).

  • Pros: Sizzling platters! Prompt service...
  • Cons: maybe a little too prompt, cramped dining room, pushy

Run away from this place

by plymouthgirl at Citysearch

After reading all of your glowing reviews, I made the big mistake of eating here last night prior to an event at the Agganis Arena. We ordered a variety of items (fresh spring rolls, ribs, pad thai special of the day and spicy pork & green beans) they were all lacking in flavor, spice and culinary skill. This place is a mill where they churn out subpar food that all looks and tastes the same. They rush the food to your table and try to hustle you out to turn as many tables as possible. I can only assume they do not think you are coming back so crappy food and rushed service are the norm. Do not waste your time or money, eating at any of the fast food places nearby is a better bet than this place.

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: food not very authentic, bathroom was filthy

good food, sub-par service

by freewilly7 at Citysearch

hostesses, not the happiest on earth. at peak times wait is longer than the meal itself. service is dependent on individual server. tables are placed very close to one another your rear end risks sweeping other people's food off their table. overall experience is... "acceptable."

food, for the most part, is great, and they have about 20 kinds of pad thai for you to try at each visit! my personal fav is the roast duck red curry, although one time it was on a sweeter side of curry (which i like) and one time it was like szechuan spicy.

:)

  • Pros: totally T accessible (green line B), good food.
  • Cons: street parking along comm ave hasn't been difficult, if you go early. nowhere but outside to wait during winter season.
