The Scene
Tucked inside an outdoor food court, Chacarero is the hands-down favorite of Downtown Crossing shoppers, tourists and business types eager to grab a reliably delicious, cheap bite on the run. A metal counter and a couple of grills are all this food stand has to offer, so customers take their food to go. During warmer months, happy patrons devour their sandwiches on nearby public benches.
The Food
The stand is named after a traditional Chilean sandwich, which the stand serves exclusively. The sandwich starts with light, puffy, cake-like bread, made fresh daily on premises and stuffed with tender grilled chicken or steak. It's completed with steamed green beans, jalapenos, Muenster cheese, tomatoes, avocado spread, salt and pepper and a secret hot sauce. Fans of the warm homemade bread often order it by itself. Soft drinks, water and juices round out the small menu.

This sandwich is absolutely delicious!! the combination of the soft tender beef with the advocado sauce, cheese and string beans doesn't sound as appealing but you have to try it yourself. the line is worth the wait and it moves quickly, sometimes quicker than some fast food places. they closed down for a little while when there was construction of the Filene's building and I was devastated. I am so glad they opened right back up. The small sandwich is a great size for lunch. Check it out!!

I am forever greatful to my friend who introduced me to the Chacarero. The homemade bread is delicious, all of the topings make for a delicous combination which will, in many cases, have you instantly hooked. They take an assembly line approach and due to the usual lines, they move quickly, so they wont have time to greet you and some people may find it rude - I don't agree - it's just the system.

Long line for terrible food and rude service. I thought the long line must be an indication of good food but it turns out it was just a bunch of sheep following the herd. Also, don't ask for extra peppers or they will make you get back in line to order again because peppers cost EXTRA. Don't waste your time with this place.

The Extras:
The staff happily accommodates vegetarians with a meat-free version of the signature sandwich. They'll also gladly hold any items you'd prefer to skip.
When to Go:
A small operation and long, eager lines make for a lengthy lunch hour. Show up before noon (or after 2pm) to avoid the crowd. Even better, phone in your order in advance.
Know Before You Go:
Ask for lots of napkins--juices have a habit of dripping through the sandwiches' foil wrapping.
