Great weekend bar. Ladies: if you think you've run out of places to look for guys in Boston, look no further. Green Briar is 90% guys on the weekends - and while every bar will have its share of skeezeballs, most of the guys here seem to be the guy-next-door type. On the weekends, half the bar is a dance party and the other half has tables and booths to chill with friends. It is a $5 cover on weekends for the DJ/band, but the smaller/intimate dance floor is wicked fun. The drinks are well-proportioned alcohol to price - $4 Coors Lights, and $7 mixed drinks. (Try a mind eraser - so good here!) A fun place to hang out with friends, and also a fun place to meet people. My only complaint is how early they close - last call is at 12:30am; since we don't even get there til about 11pm, we only have an hour and a half to enjoy.
Baby, I'm not feeling so good..
I have been to MANY Irish pubs in my day. This one, although clean and neutral smelling, seems a bit contrived and lacking. The bartender Tommy was as bitter as can be, (Don't like your job, quit!) and no, I don't have high expectations for bartenders in a pub. I do expect to get a beer. Simple. Loved the session in the next room. The music was great and there were a lot of musicians. The food was good, even bordering on great... with one hitch. I was meeting a friend I had not seen is a very long time. We both had the fish & chips, which was pretty good. (I have had a LOT of fish and chips). A few weeks later, we both were talking about how great it was to see each other blah blah blah... and compared how violently ill we both were that night at 2AM (2:30 for me). Folks this is not a coincidence. I was sick for the entire next day and chalked it up to the freaky stomach flu going around, but au contraire mon frere.
Stick to the beer here... if you can get one.
Multi-dimensional Brighton Irish pub provides locals with an affordable spot to grub or watch a game..
In Short
Some form of entertainment is offered almost every night--Mondays bring lively Irish Seisuns, Tuesdays see raucous trivia contests, and weekends host either DJs or live bands. Expat sport fans come in to watch live Irish sports like rugby, soccer, hurling and Gaelic football. Upscale pub fare (baked smoked Gouda dip, Portobello toasties, chicken curry stew) and an extensive drink list keep patrons satiated.
Always a great time. I've been a patron of the Briar for several years and find the place to be a great local bar. Drinks are cheap (stay away from complicated cocktails) and the bar service is always great. The food is average but the steamed muscles and burgers are SUBLIME. The trad. irish breakfast is the BEST IN THE CITY. The crowd is usually mixed students/Irish/25-35 on the weekends with lots of Irish on Sundays/Mondays when the music takes on trad. flavor with Finbar Doyle (patriotic singing), Inchicore and the sessiuns on Mondays. During the football season, the Briar is PACKED on Sun & Sat mornings for the Setanta broadcasts of the Gaelic Games, just watch out for the $20 cover.
go for bangers. the green briar is a little expensive, but is the best place to meet your mates. the basket of bangers and chips is tops anywhere. and the crowd is always changing
