The Scene
On Red Sox game nights, expect a mix of older and younger patrons celebrating a win or drowning their sorrows. Otherwise--when school's in session--this is one of Boston University's most popular bars. Despite the occasional goth or reggae night, you can count on a clean-cut, student crowd dancing to contemporary music.
The Draw
A long, handsome bar serves up an excellent assortment of beers and spirits. The front tables enjoy an open-air view of Beacon Street. When there isn't a Sox game during the day, this is a great spot for a quiet pint or meal. The standard bar menu offers burgers and salads as well as the usual snacks, including heaping plates of nachos and fries. Come late night on weekends, the place gets packed as freshly scrubbed singles shake to whatever's playing.

Insider Tips
When to GoWednesdays come alive thanks to karaoke in the bar area and salsa dancing in the club. Friday and Saturday nights host DJs spinning Top 40 and hip-hop.

I went to An Tua Nua last night for a friend's birthday. I hadn't been before so I didn't know what to expect but I was really disappointed. There are so many bars in Boston to choose from, I certainly wouldn't bother wasting my time going back here. The music was poor. The dance floor was massive but there weren't enough people so you felt ridiculous(and it was Saturday night!!!). There is only 1 bathroom for women by the main bar which means there's constantly a massive line. Once I finally managed to get to use the bathroom I felt like I would catch something, it was so dirty. The manager (at least I think he was the manager) was rude. My friends and I were joking around with some straws....admittedly not the most mature thing to do but it was his birthday and it was a bit of a long running joke, so the manager got annoyed. Rather than talking to us then and there, he didn't say anything but when we went to buy our next drinks they wouldn't serve us because we'd "had enough". I had only had 2 beers and would be the first to admit it if I had. I asked him about his decision and he was totally obnoxious. So if you want a place where you can't have a laugh with your friends without being penalized, the dance floor is pathetic and you spend 80% of your evening in the line for the bathroom...this is your venue! Personally, try somewhere else!
Pros: Cheap(ish)
Cons: Rude staff, constant line for bathroom,

After hearing a lot about this place I finally went there. Wednesdays seemed to be the best, Karaoke and Salsa--where can you get such a combination. Sadly both were disappointing. Salsa dance crowd had some real unfriendly young women. I've never seen such unfriendly and impolite behavior before at a Salsa club. After this, I decided to go out and check out the Karaoke, after all how much worse could things get. I went to submit a request to the organizer/DJ of the Karaoke, Mac Daddy or whatever, but he just refused to even accept my request. It was around 11:15-11:20 PM and he told me I'm too late. I thought maybe this guy just cannot accept more requests. He however kept accepting taking requests from others till midnight at which point I left. I did feel that perhaps I did not look like others in the place (I'm not white that is). Again, the only people singing were mostly undergrad/grad crowd of young people. I really do not want to say anything really bad in a public forum but when I left the place I felt really terrible and humiliated. I should add that the Salsa dance floor is great, not too crowded, the regulars are great and very diverse and fun loving crowd, but then there were those young women there (undergrad type), and when guys asked them to dance they acted as if something very wrong had happened, I was actually sitting next to them and heard their conversation and saw their rude behavior. It was perhaps their first visit to a Salsa club but everyone goes for a first time but no one acts so strangely . The outside crowd was different, the staff was fine but Mac Daddy's Karaoke won't get any points from me for trying to be more inclusive. I guess thats one reason why the Salsa and Karaoke crowd do not mix.
