Castle Island and Fort Independence

by briannect at Citysearch

We stumbled upon Castle Island and Fort Independence quite by accident. It is a beautiful park and the tour of the fort was fabulous. We had a great tour guide named Jim so if you get to take the tour try and do it with Jim. The park is a very popular place and so parking can be tough. But the walk is great with wonderful views of the harbor area and the city of Boston. If you are in Boston make a trip to South Boston and Castle Island. it is a great leisurely day..... in the city but away from the hustle bustle of city life...well worth the trip.

  • Pros: Great views interesting history
  • Cons: parking

Castle Island a place of my childhood..Summertime we would have dinner on the pier at Kelly's, then a walk out to the Sugar Bowl..every night all our neighbors would walk out to the Sugar Bowl or Castle Island (it wasn't connected then)....swimming & diving on the wharf at Kelly's....evenings listening to music in the park at Farragut beach.....Summers always seemed so long & would go on forever...Oh the sweetness of being a child....It was another world then...

  • Pros: peaceful, view, clean
  • Cons: parking, can't visit anytime, crowded weekends
