Editorial Review for Charles Playhouse – by Citysearch Staff
History
Originally built as a Universalist Church, the theater is now the home of "Shear Madness," the longest-playing comedy in American history. (This explains why Warrenton Street is also known as Shear Madness Boulevard.) The venue also hosts other performances. Most recently it's become the home for the amazing Blue Man Group.
Features
Walk off the street on a bright day and you're plunged into a sensory-deprivation tank of darkness. The low ceilings and windowless walls could drive anyone to drink. The basement theater is a cabaret-style setup that seats about 200 and includes a nonstop, highly distracting wait staff that industriously dispenses alcoholic beverages throughout the performances. Upstairs, in the main performance space, the seating capacity is greater; up to 500 patrons can be accommodated.
