Editorial Review for Hollywood Bowl – by Matt MacDonald

The Appeal
What started as a fleet of wooden benches in Hollywood's Bolton Canyon has grown into a sweeping outdoor venue that hosts some of the best names in music. Everyone from Frank Sinatra to Radiohead, Luciano Pavarotti to the Who has taken the famed stage. A new shell was erected in 2004, and Frank Gehry's spheres have been replaced by a more acoustically sound halo, which also incorporates lighting and sound equipment.

The Experience
Come July, the L.A. Philharmonic lures concertgoers to the hills with its elegant shows under the stars. Special events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, John Williams' Movie Memories and the Playboy Jazz Festival round out the summer lineup. And the Bowl experience isn't complete without picnicking on the grounds, a cherished tradition among many Angelenos. Bring your own spread, or have the Patina Group prepare an exquisite dinner served right in your box.

The Hollywood Bowl is a true Los Angeles landmark. The architecture alone has made it a definitive symbol of the city. It has been featured in countless films and even in a legendary animated Looney Tunes feature with a certain Warner Bros cartoon rabbit. I recently saw John Williams conduct the L.A. Philharmonic as they did pieces from the various film scores of John Williams. It was such a great experience. The way to go is to pack some snacks and some wine and have yourself a picnic as you enjoy some beautiful music. Just know that certain concerts do not allow food so make sure to check the Hollywood Bowl's website for their individual show policies.

Pros: A Must Do if you love music

Cons: It might be bad if you sit in the bleacher section and then all the people next to you are super fat

With the fresh mountain air and valley breeze, lush greenery surrounding the seating area, and the Hollywood sign as a backdrop, I don't think there is a better place to watch a show. The seating is so spacious, you can usually sit a litle closer since it's benches. I love the fact that you can bring food and wine from the outside, it's great. I've been to the Reggae Fest at the Bowl the last 2 years. and I plan to go again this year! I also had the honor of seeing the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown perform there (AMAZING!!! R.I.P.) It's so much fun, perfect for a date, or with friends, great acoustics and lighting, and if it's been parodied on "The Simpsons", you know it's good!

Pros: Beautiful backdrop, great sound and lights

Cons: Food and drinks can be expensive [Just bring your own ;O) ]
